La chiesa e il convento domenicani hanno una lunga storia che risale al XIV secolo e anche prima, sebbene la chiesa attuale abbia subito modifiche e restauri effettuati da allora, in particolare nel XIX e XX secolo. La costruzione iniziale della chiesa fu finanziata da D. Lourenço Vicente, arcivescovo di Braga.
La chiesa presenta elementi architettonici romanici, gotici e barocchi nel suo interno piuttosto austero.
Particolarmente belli sono il chiostro, oggi parte del Museu da Sociedade Martins Sarmento, e l'organo.
Dopo la soppressione dei monasteri portoghesi, la chiesa fu utilizzata per un certo periodo dall'esercito.
