L'església i el convent dels dominics tenen una llarga història que es remunta al segle XIV i abans, tot i que l'església actual ha patit reformes i restauracions fetes des de llavors, especialment als segles XIX i XX. La construcció inicial de l'església va ser finançada per D. Lourenço Vicente, arquebisbe de Braga.
L'església té elements d' arquitectura romànica, gòtica i barroca al seu interior una mica auster.
Particularment bell és el claustre, que avui forma part del Museu de la Societat Martins Sarmento, així com l'òrgan.
Després de la supressió dels monestirs portuguesos, l'església va ser utilitzada durant un temps per l'exèrcit.
