Die öffentliche Bibliothek von Braga wurde 1841 von Königin Maria II. gegründet, um die Buchhandlungen der verschwundenen Klöster der Region wie Falperra, Tibães und Congregados zu schützen.
Ursprünglich war hier die Bibliothek untergebracht. Die Sammlung wurde durch die Pflichtexemplarabgabe erweitert und umfasst seit 1931 eine Kopie der in Portugal erschienenen Veröffentlichungen. Gleichzeitig beherbergte das Museum Sammlungen lokaler Persönlichkeiten und Institutionen wie beispielsweise Manuel Monteiro, Carrington da Costa, Víctor de Sa, Manuel d'Oliveira und dem Minhoto Regional Studies Institute, um nur einige zu nennen.
Die BPB befindet sich seit 1934 im Barockflügel des Komplexes Largo do Paço an der Praça do Município und wurde 1975 in die UMinho integriert.
Es gibt eine Sammlung von mehr als 500.000 Dokumenten, darunter eine Sammlung von 53 Inkunabeln (aus der Frühzeit des Buchdrucks) und mindestens 400 Bände aus dem 16. Jahrhundert.
