Khon Buri bedeutet in der thailändischen Sprache die Quelle des Flusses, was auf einen der Nebenflüsse des Mun-Flusses verweist, der dort vorbeifließt. Früher wurde es Ban Khon Buri genannt. Als die Stadt wuchs, wurde es in Mueang Khon und schließlich in Khon Buri umbenannt. Im Jahr 1907 unserer Zeitrechnung war dieses Gebiet ein Unterbezirk des Distrikts Chok Chai. Es wurde King Amphoe Chae genannt, weil das Stadtzentrum in Tambon Chae lag.
