Das Territorium gelangte im Jahr 1772 im Rahmen der ersten Teilung Polens als Kronland Königreich Galizien und Lodomerien an das österreichische Haus Habsburg und wurde 1804 Bestandteil des Kaisertums Österreich. Von 1867 bis 1918 war es Kronland im cisleithanischen Teil Österreich-Ungarns.
Die Namen Galizien und Lodomerien sind Umlautungen der Städte Halytsch am Dnjestr sowie Wolodymyr in Wolhynien. In ihrer neuen Form waren die Namen Teil der ungarischen Königstitulatur, weil das Fürstentum Halytsch-Wolhynien im 14. Jahrhundert unter König Ludwig von Ungarn und Polen kurzzeitig zum Königreich Ungarn gehörte. Von dort wurde der Name als Bezeichnung für das Gebiet genommen, das bei der Ersten Teilung Polens zu Österreich gekommen war.
