Dal 1772 al 1918, il Regno di Galizia e Lodomiria, che si estendeva su tale regione, fu la più grande, la più popolata e la più settentrionale delle province dell'Impero Austro-Ungarico, con Leopoli come capitale. Fu creata dai territori presi alla Confederazione Polacco-Lituana durante le Spartizioni della Polonia ed esistette fino alla dissoluzione dell'Austria-Ungheria, avvenuta alla fine della prima guerra mondiale.
Il nome Galicia et Lodomeria venne usato per la prima volta nel XIII secolo da re Andrea II d'Ungheria. Si trattava di una versione latinizzata dei nomi slavi Halyč e Volodymyr, le due più grandi città del principato ucraino di Galizia e Volinia, che all'epoca si trovava sotto il dominio ungherese.
