Gegründet wurde die Cornell University 1865 von Ezra Cornell, einem Geschäftsmann und Pionier der Telekommunikationsindustrie, und Andrew Dickson White, einem bekannten Gelehrten und Politiker. Das 1865 von Ezra Cornell formulierte Motto der Hochschule ist „I would found an institution where any person can find instruction in any study“ ; in Kurzform findet es sich im Wappen der Universität.
