Der Einsturz der ersten Tacoma-Narrows-Brücke am 7. November 1940 war Anlass, bei der Konstruktion von Brücken die Dynamik zu berücksichtigen und vor dem Bau größerer Brücken Modelle im Windkanal zu testen.
Sie führt die autobahnähnlich ausgebaute Staatsstraße 16 von Tacoma über die Tacoma Narrows, einen Seitenarm des Puget Sounds, nach Gig Harbor und erschließt so die nur im Südwesten mit dem Festland verbundene Kitsap-Halbinsel mit dem Hauptort Bremerton von Südosten her. Die Brücke besteht aus zwei parallelen Bauwerken, von denen jedes den Verkehr einer Fahrtrichtung aufnimmt. Vor der Inbetriebnahme der zweiten Brücke im Juli 2007 floss der gesamte Verkehr über das 1950 fertiggestellte Bauwerk.
