Die 30. Alpine Skiweltmeisterschaft fand vom 29. Januar bis 12. Februar 1989 in Vail im US-Bundesstaat Colorado statt.
Die Weltmeisterschaften wurden am 29. Januar um 18 Uhr Ortszeit in der Dobson-Eisarena eröffnet. Der ehemalige US-Präsident Gerald Ford, der als eifriger Förderer des Aufstiegs dieser Skiregion zu einem der größten Skigebiete der USA galt, fand sich dazu ein. John Denver gab ein Konzert.
