Balkh is one of the oldest cities in the world. The Arabs called it Umm Al-Belaad or Mother of Cities due to its antiquity.
North of the current town of Balkh, you can find the ruins of the "old Balkh". It is situated some 12 km from the right bank of the seasonally-flowing Balkh River.
Balkh was named Bactra by the Greeks.
