Did you know that the architect of the Vienna opera committed suicide because of the criticisms about the building. Hard to understand for the many admirers of this piece of culture. The KK Hofoper was designed (in neo-Renaissance style ) by the architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Edward van der Nüll . When it was built, people were not satisfied at all. The bourgeoisie had invested, but they wanted a different, more classical architect. Because the buildings along the streets were built later, it was thought that the building sank into its surroundings. The opera is nicknamed the "Sunken Coffin". Due to financial constraints, the architects could not use the desired natural stone as facing brick. There was a huge smear campaign against the architects. That was one of the elements that caused Edward van der Nüll to commit suicide. He hung himself on April 4 in 1868. After his death, the building and the man did receive appreciation. The building itself was declared in 1907 as the most beautiful opera in the world.
