On a ridge above the left bank of the Bregenzer Ache lies the simple village of Alberschwende (721 m; 1450 inhabitants). Alberschwende is often referred to as the gateway to the Bregenzerwald. The main connecting road between the Rhine Valley and the Bregenzerwald starts in Dornbirn and then goes through Alberschwende to Egg. Once arrived in Alberschwende, the 'gate' opens up to a wide view of the Bregenzerwald with its rolling meadows, forested heights, and valleys, and in the distance, the bare summit of Winterstaude. To enjoy an even broader view, there is the chairlift to Brüggele Kopf (1182 m). From there, particularly beautiful hikes can be made in the mountain area between Alberschwende and Dornbirn.
