Vienna

Vienna is the federal capital of the Republic of Austria and one of the nine Austrian federal states. With around 1.9 million inhabitants, Vienna, located on the Danube River, is the most populous city and primate city of Austria, the second largest in the German-speaking area, and the fifth largest city in the European Union. About 2.8 million people live in the Vienna metropolitan area – which corresponds to about one third of the total population of Austria.

Architecturally, Vienna to this day is primarily characterized by the buildings around the Ringstrasse from the Gründerzeit, as well as by Baroque and Art Nouveau. Due to its role as the imperial capital and residence city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire since 1804, Vienna became a cultural and political center of Europe. Around the year 1910, when Vienna was still the capital of the Habsburg monarchy, the city had over two million inhabitants. The historic center of Vienna and the Schönbrunn Palace are now UNESCO World Heritage Sites. With around 7.5 million tourists and about 16.5 million guest overnight stays annually, Vienna is one of the most visited cities in Europe.
