Heiligenstadt Park

The Heiligenstadt Park is a 9-hectare large city park located in the Heiligenstadt district of the 19th district of Vienna, Döbling. It was established under Mayor Karl Lueger at the beginning of the 20th century.
Prior to the establishment of the park, the discovery of a mineral spring from Roman times in 1781 led to the creation of the Heiligenstadt Bath with its spa garden. This was located east of the Heiligenstadt parish church of St. Michael at the present address Grinzinger Straße 84–86. In 1845, the facility passed to Josef and Leopoldine Kugler, who transported interested visitors from the inner-city Neuen Markt to the swimming school, cold and hot bath establishment with their own company carriage that ran every hour. Kugler, who as the owner of the bath also operated the associated restaurant and rented out rooms on the property, expanded the operation that was architecturally adjacent to the park in the first two years, among other things, he built a theater arena that was under the direction of the brother of Wenzel Scholz. In 1860, there was public speculation that the water used in the bath came from the Nestelbach, which flowed through the bathing area from west to east. Kugler denied the claim, pointing out that the water from the wild brook was only used to power a hoisting machine for the bathwater supplied by wells.
