Bürgerspital Church

The Bürgerspital Church of the Holy Spirit is a Roman Catholic church in the 5th district of Graz, Gries. Today, it is the benefice of the Church of the Holy Spirit in the Bürgerspital, which is under the parish of Graz-St. Andrä and belongs to the Graz-Mitte deanery of the municipal church of Graz.
Due to the overpopulation of Graz within the city walls, the Murvorstadt was founded on the right bank of the Mur River. Where the districts of Gries and Lend are today, there previously lived workers and the poor who needed medical care. Since the care of the sick has been in the hands of religious communities since the Middle Ages, the administration of the Hospitalum ad sanctum spiritum by a hospital master, a mistress, and several helpers as a secular institution is remarkable. The establishment was called Spittel in the Au and primarily provided shelter for the sick, orphans, widows, pilgrims, and neglected children. The hospital was one of the oldest in Graz – it had existed since the 14th century – and was dissolved by Emperor Joseph II.
