The Arlberg Pass road was constructed as early as 1785, making it the main connection between the Swiss and Austrian cities. In 1978, due to the increasing traffic congestion, a new toll road was opened alongside this traditional route, featuring the 14 km long Arlberg Tunnel between Langen and St. Anton am Arlberg. Additionally, there is the somewhat older Arlberg railway line (1880-'84), which has its own tunnel spanning over 10 km. Most traffic uses the toll road with tunnel to avoid excessive delays; cars with trailers are even required to use this route, as they are not allowed over the Arlberg pass summit (1793 m).
