The parish church of Obergurgl is located in the village of Obergurgl in Gurgl in the municipality of Sölden in Tyrol. The Roman Catholic parish church of St. John Nepomuk belongs to the district of Silz in the Diocese of Innsbruck. The highest parish church in Austria, located at 1927 meters above sea level, is a listed building.
According to documents, a chapelry was built on the site of a chapel in 1726 and consecrated to St. John Nepomuk, who was canonized in 1729, in 1737. In 1315, the Schwaighöfe of Gurgl were given from the original parish of Silz in the Inn Valley to the parish of Umhausen. The chapelry was elevated to parish church status in 1891. In 1924, the church was expanded by architect Clemens Holzmeister to include an additional gallery and a side chapel. Again with architect Holzmeister, it was expanded in 1966, whereby a wider, deeper new construction now connects to the former altar space. The extension was consecrated by Bishop Paulus Rusch in honor of St. Paul. In the transition between the old and new buildings stands the altar of the people, and the Mass can be celebrated in both directions. In 1998, the gallery in the old nave was dismantled, and a new gallery was constructed in the extension.
