Emperor Franz I. Stephen unexpectedly died of a stroke on August 18, 1765, in the Innsbruck Hofburg, while the ruling family was in Innsbruck for the wedding of Archduke Leopold to Maria Ludovica of Spain. His wife Maria Theresa was deeply shaken by this and mourned him greatly. "In eternal remembrance," she founded the secular noble ladies' convent at her husband's place of death later that same year.
