The upper part of the Habachtal is a textbook example of a U-valley. A trough valley or U-valley has a U-shape and a flat bottom with steep walls on both sides. A U-valley is created when a river or a glacier erodes the soil. In a trough valley, however, the rock on the bottom is too hard, so that vertical erosion hardly takes place. However, horizontal erosion continues. This creates the U-shape. A U-valley can also arise because a glacier takes/abrasives large pieces of land.
