Manuel Sintubin , geologist, talks about these stromatolites and the enormous importance and significance of these rocks. They are the first life forms that we know (for now) that date from about 3.5 billion years ago (the Precambrian ).
Different types of bacteria that formed these stomatolites took CO2 from the atmosphere and turned it into mounds of "limestone". Some of those types of bacteria, blue-green algae or cyanobacteria, are species that (for the first time?) carry out photosynthesis. A new revolutionary energy producing process based on chlorophyll, light and carbon dioxide. It had one very "weird" and for many living things at the time, a very toxic product : oxygen.
