Description by the author

The Ciro Trail is a special cycling route that largely follows the route of the former railway line between Mostar (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Dubrovnik (Croatia). The route is approximately 140 kilometers long and offers a mix of gravel and asphalt roads, with a rich variety of nature, culture and history.

You will ride mostly on the old railway, which means that the route is relatively flat, with occasional longer but not too steep climbs. You will cross three UNESCO World Heritage sites, pass old stations, tunnels and bridges, and ride through beautiful, unspoiled landscapes. The route consists of gravel paths, asphalt roads and some unpaved sections. Some sections are remote, so take enough water and provisions with you. Between Ravno and Zavala you can opt for an adventurous section through tunnels, including a bat tunnel. Just before Dubrovnik there is a beautiful descent to the coast. Signposting: The Ciro Trail is signposted in many places, but a GPS route is recommended.

General course of the route:

  • Starting point: Mostar, known for the iconic Stari Most (Old Bridge) and the historic center.

  • Via: Čapljina – here you follow the Neretva River and pass small villages and old stations.

  • Along: Neum – the only stretch of Bosnian coast, with nice views and a bit more climbing.

  • Through: Ravno – here you can choose a stretch of unpaved path with old railway tunnels, including the famous bat tunnel between Ravno and Zavala 5 .

  • Next: Trebinje – an atmospheric city with a historic centre.

  • End point: Dubrovnik – the famous Croatian coastal city, where you will arrive after a descent and crossing the border.
