Between the year 1518 and the year 1539, the late-gothic parts of the townhall were constructed, which can be seen from the "Botermarkt" and the "Hoogpoort". The "Pacificatie-hall" and the "wedding-hall" are part of this construction.
A lack of money, due to a quarrel with Emperor Charles the 5th, stopped the construction for several years.
Only in the next century, they started woking again, erecting an extra floor on top of the Wedding-hall.
In the next centuries, the city hall was extended, using the popular styles of that time:
Along the "Botermarkt", the Italian renaissance style of the 16th-17th century was used.
At the corner of "Hoogpoort-Stadhuissteeg", the building is constructed in the style of the Flemish baroque of the 18th century.
Along the square "Emile Braun, the rococo-style was used.
