The Ghent Millionaires' Quarter is located in the Sint-Pieters Aalstwijk, a hamlet with quite a long history. In a distant past, this neighborhood was donated by Dagobert I to the Saint Peter's Abbey so that the monks could grow their vegetables there.
The harvest must have been good because until the subdivision of this neighborhood in 1926, crops were grown there with great joy. Given the sparse construction, the spacious fertile fields were chosen to serve as official exhibition grounds during the World Expo.
Few adjustments were needed, and the Sint-Pieters Aalstwijk was beautifully situated, close to the Sint-Pieters train station and right next to the Citadel Park. Nothing stood in the way of that world exhibition...
