Artevelde was a businessman and statesman from Ghent. He traded in cattle, fish, wine, silver, and textiles. He lived on the Kalandeberg, and was murdered near his home in Paddenhoek on July 17, 1345. Some versions mention that this happened when he tried to flee his house, while other versions claim that it occurred when he returned home after discussions in Damme. What is sometimes agreed upon is that he was murdered by Gerard Denijs, master of the weavers' guild.
