In the year 1473, Margareta of York gave a gigantic financial gift to the Dominican cloister of Ghent. They decided to invest the money in a useful way and made a huge library with a large number of mideaval books in this cloister.
Unfortunaltey, not much is left from the library because of the riots which took place during the religious reformation in Ghent. In the year 1566, these riots focussed on the library of the monks and a lot of books were thrown in the river La Lyse, next to the cloister. The chronics describe that there were so many books thrown in the river, you could cross the river on foot.
