The French Canal is one of the three cuts that were dug in Ghent in the 18th century. The most famous of the three is still called Coupure, the other is the Visserijvaart. In the map by Ignace Balthasar Malfeson from 1755, the three waterways are indicated with the term coupure. The French Canal was completed in 1752 and widened and deepened between 1772 and 1776 to drain water from the Scheldt more quickly at the southern edge of Ghent. The canal is about a kilometer long and branches off to the right under the bridge of Dierentuinlaan. From there, it runs just south of the Scheldt from the Strop neighborhood to flow back into the Scheldt at the height of the Vlaamsekaai. It runs mostly through Ledeberg and forms part of the northern boundary of Gentbrugge.
