El Canal Francés es uno de los tres cortes que se cavaron en Gante en el siglo XVIII. El más conocido de los tres se llama aún Coupure, el otro es el Canal de la Pesca. En el mapa de Ignace Balthasar Malfeson de 1755, los tres cauces de agua se indican con el término coupure. El Canal Francés se completó en 1752 y entre 1772 y 1776 se amplió y se profundizó, para llevar más rápidamente el agua del Escalda en el borde sur de Gante. El canal tiene aproximadamente un kilómetro de largo y se desvía hacia la derecha bajo el puente de la Avenida del Zoológico. Desde allí, fluye justo al sur del Escalda desde el barrio de Strop para desembocar nuevamente en el Escalda a la altura del Vlaamskaai. En su mayor parte, fluye a través de Ledeberg y forma una parte de la frontera norte de Gentbrugge.
