Le Canal Français est l'un des trois canaux qui ont été creusés à Gand au 18ème siècle. Le plus connu des trois s'appelle encore Coupure, les autres sont le Canal de la Pêche. Sur la carte d'Ignace Balthasar Malfeson de 1755, les trois cours d'eau sont désignés par le terme coupure. Le Canal Français a été achevé en 1752 et élargi et approfondi entre 1772 et 1776, afin d’évacuer plus rapidement les eaux de l'Escaut sur le bord sud de Gand. Le canal mesure environ un kilomètre de long et bifurque à droite sous le pont de l'Avenue du Zoo. De là, il s'écoule juste au sud de l'Escaut à partir du quartier de Strop pour se jeter à nouveau dans l'Escaut au niveau de la Vlaamsekaai. Il traverse en grande partie Ledeberg et forme en partie la limite nord de Gandbrugge.
