Il Canale Francese è uno dei tre canali che furono scavati a Gand nel XVIII secolo. Il più famoso dei tre è ancora chiamato Coupure, l'altro è il Canale della Pesca. Nella mappa di Ignace Balthasar Malfeson del 1755, i tre corsi d'acqua sono indicati con il termine coupure. Il Canale Francese è stato completato nel 1752 e tra il 1772 e il 1776 è stato ampliato e approfondito, per liberare più rapidamente l'acqua dalla Schelda al bordo meridionale di Gand. Il canale ha una lunghezza di circa un chilometro e si dirama a destra sotto il ponte di Dierentuinlaan. Da lì scorre appena a sud della Schelda dal quartiere Strop per sfociare nuovamente nella Schelda all'altezza di Vlaamsekaai. Attraversa per la maggior parte Ledeberg e forma in parte il confine settentrionale di Gentbrugge.
