September 1419 was not a pleasant month for the inhabitants of the Prinsenhof. Jean de Thoisy, bishop of Tournai, received the thankless task of coming to report the murder of John the Fearless to his son, Philip of Charolais or Philip the Good. John the Fearless was murdered in cold blood on September 10 1419, during his meeting with the dauphin at Montereau-Fault-Yonne. And this happened at the bridge over the Yonne, at the edge of the old town of Montereau in France.
His son, Philip the Good, who lived here in the Prinsenhof in Ghent with his wife Michelle of France, was completely unaware of any wrongdoing. It was even his wife's brother who had murdered his father. This can certainly be considered a family drama. Things would never be right between husband and wife again. When Michelle died a few years later, Philip the Good himself sent his cat to the funeral of his own wife.
