Van Loo explains how the Stoofstraat, the oldest known street name in Brussels, got its name: there were three bathhouses established, where you could not only wash yourself, but also eat, listen to music, seek company, and be “entertained” by the stew women. “Farewell Brussels, where the stews are important and the girls are attractive,” wrote the poet Eustache Deschamps as a farewell to the city, “like a 14th-century Raymond van het Groenewoud.”
