The first stone of the federal parliament building (the Palace of the Nation) was laid in 1779 under Austrian rule in neoclassical style. The building initially served as the seat of the Sovereign Council of Brabant, the highest court and governing body of the Duchy of Brabant. During the French occupation, the courts were located there. At the time of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, the building served as the meeting place for the States-General, which met alternately in Brussels and The Hague.
During the Belgian Revolution, the Provisional Government and the National Congress established themselves in the current parliament, and since 1831, the House of Representatives and the Senate have been seated there.
The Federal Parliament or Belgian Parliament is the national representation of Belgium. The Federal Parliament is comparable to the Dutch States-General.
