It was, perhaps, Brussels' most popular neighbourhood. The halls were built in 1881 as a food market. To help prevent infections such as cholera, the city authorities tried to regulate the sale of food and keep it in hygienic food halls. The beautiful brick building with its canopies fulfilled this function with supreme verve until 1977. When they were relaunched in the 1980s, after a thorough restoration, the halls became a neighbourhood meeting centre with exhibition possibilities. The residents come here to play chess, or just to curl up on the sofas and deckchairs on lazy Sunday afternoons.
