The Minardschouwburg is named after its architect Louis Minard, who built this building in 1847, in response to the then French-speaking theater and opera at the Kouter. He built this at his own expense.
The façade is a beautiful example of late-Classical architecture. The plastered and painted façade is accentuated at the level of the bel étage by tall arched windows with decoratively worked arch fields.
The Minardschouwburg served as the Dutch Theater until 1898. In the early 20th century, the interior was completely redesigned with a very eclectic decor. By the end of the 1980s, the building had completely fallen into disrepair but was fully restored before the turn of the century.
It still serves as a receptive theater platform where, among other things, a significant part of the Vooruit programming finds a home. This was the theater where Romain De Coninck staged his popular plays. Each year, the Gent Volkstheater still performs some of his works in this building during the months of July and December. In honor of Romain, there is a "sitting" statue of him in the square in front of the theater.
