The Great Sickle, W of Biezekapelstraat, consists of two Gothic stepped gables dating from the 16th century. An inverted trumpet hangs at the large entrance gate. This trumpet had a very practical reason. In earlier times, many nobles moved on horseback. Since a horse is not equipped with headlights, one had to carry a torch at dusk. However, this torch had to be extinguished before entering the Sickle. To that end, an inverted trumpet was affixed next to the gate, a torch snuffer. The last important resident of the buildings was Count Van Limburg-Stirum. Today, the conservatory is housed in the Great Sickle.
