The Rijvissche Castle in Zwijnaarde dates back to the Middle Ages. Surrounded by moats, the castle served as a water castle in the 12th century on the medieval defensive belt around Ghent and belonged to the Saint Peter's Abbey.
Over the years, it became the property of the de van den Bossche-de Meyere family. This was the family of Maurice Maeterlinck. Nathalie de Meyere, widow of François van den Bossche, was his grandmother on his mother's side. Maeterlinck regularly stayed here during his childhood.
