When you face away from Artevelde, and you look in southern direction, you see at the edge of the square a pink house with a large baroque wooden gate. This is the "Toog"-house.
Before the 18th century, there was a wooden house at this location, which played an important role in the political life of Ghent. It was the place where the peoples assemblies were held fromthe 14th century onwards.
There was a large staircase that lead to a wooden balcony on the first floor. On that balcony, everybody could give a speech or speak up his mind.
It was also from this place that the city-rulers were watching games which were held frequently on the square.
