Meix-devant-Virton is a small village by the stream Chevratte, in the Land of Gaum, a part of Belgian Lorraine, which is the southernmost part of the province of Luxembourg. The name is said to be derived from the Germanic word for mire = swamp. There are indeed some swamps within the village’s territory. In the past, Meix often suffered greatly, among other occasions on June 11, 1636, when it was burned down by Croatian soldiers in the service of the Holy Roman Empire. Nature lovers will be pleased to hear that Meix-devant-Virton (pronounced in French: Miks) is surrounded by 900 hectares of forest.
