When it was finished in 1883, this palace by architect Poelaert was the largest eclectic building in Europe. Belgium wanted to showcase itself as a strong and wealthy industrial nation by building something so big. On the old site were the gardens of the De Mérode family and four more streets where the Marolliens lived. They did not like being rehoused in Uccle, far from their work. Every Friday until 1975, there were demonstrations against this construction, making it the longest sustained protest action in Belgian history. Legend has it that Poelaert was nicknamed ‘Skieven Architek’, which in popular parlance means 'incompetent'.
