Oudler would, given the etymology, have been founded in the 5th or 6th century. Here, oud would refer to reclaimed land, and ler to dwelling place. In 814, Oudler was first mentioned in writing, as belonging to the parish of Thommen.
In 1888, a railway bridge over the Ulf was built for the Vennbahn, which was opened in 1889 and formed the connection between the Ruhr area and Lorraine. In 1940, the bridge was blown up by the Belgian army to prevent supplies for the German troops. The Germans subsequently built a wooden bridge.
