In winter, many birds migrate south, and for some species, the destination is no further south than Belgium. Barnacle geese and Lesser white-fronted geese, for example. They fly thousands of kilometers from the Far North to the polder areas along the coast, only to return to the Arctic Circle to breed in spring. You can encounter the Arctic geese - also known as 'frost geese' - in nature reserves like De Blankaart (Diksmuide) and the Uitkerkse Polder (Blankenberge).
