The quarries in the area around Tournai have greatly contributed to the industrial wealth of the region. The consequence of that impact is also reflected in the geological name of the rock: the "Tournai limestone" which was deposited more than 350 million years ago on the sea floor. The regular layers of several tens of centimeters thick form a dome structure in depth (the Mélantois dome) of which certain layers even yield up to 250 meters of extractable limestone. The limestone from Tournai is special because it contains clay and silica sand, and therefore the quarry is also the prime location for the production of high-quality cement and crushed stone.
