Here near the station of Boortmeerbeek, German troops were stationed during WWI. During the First World War, most of Belgium was occupied by German troops. In Boortmeerbeek, it was men from the Krefelder Landsturm. The Landsturm was a corps of reserve soldiers, who were ordinary civilians in their daily lives. Because they were less well trained than the actual assault troops, and usually a bit older, they were often ridiculed. In Boortmeerbeek, they stayed at the station.
