During World War I, the 7-year-old church of Schiplaken was completely burned down during the gruesome battle of Schiplaken. This event is poignantly described in Stefan Hertmans' book, War and Turpentine: "In the village we saw the hissing ruins of houses in the rain, the beasts and people killed by mortar fire, the burnt-out church, which had only been inaugurated seven years before by Cardinal Mercier. That was all we noticed of the horrific battle of Schiplaken, which would make it to all the textbooks".
