Between the station building and the bus stands stands the bust of the Eeklose inventor Polydoor Lippens. He was born in Eeklo in 1810 and took lessons in Paris and London. He is known as the inventor of the electric bell and the electric train. The Belgian State accepted the telegraph device "Lippens" as a replacement for the English and German devices, after he greatly improved these systems. Polydoor Lippens lived for a long time in Brussels where, in addition to his research work, he taught physics to the children of Leopold I. In 1866 he returned to Eeklo, where he remained active in many fields. He died there in 1889. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of his death in 1989, the statue was unveiled at the initiative of VVV Eeklo. It was designed by Eeklonaar Albrecht D'Havé, cast by bronze founder Schellynck from Oostakker, and placed on a black Swedish granite pedestal made by Jan Tieberghien from Eeklo.
