Franz Van de Velde was born in Landskouter in 1909 and died in 2002. He joined the Oblate Fathers early.
When people in Belgium were looking for candidate missionaries for the Eskimos in Northern Canada, he felt called. In 1937 he left and after an arduous eleven-month journey ended up with the Eskimos of Pelly Bay, 320 km north of the Arctic Circle! He stayed there for 50 years, not only as a missionary, but also as a nurse, dentist, doctor, midwife... On 5 September 1981, Princess Margriet of the Netherlands came to Landskouter to unveil the monument in Balegem stone.
