The Beverhoutsveld was a common meadow until the 19th century. As early as 1158, Walter van Beverhout lived on these wild lands between Bruges and Maldegem. Unlike the other fields around Bruges, the Beverhoutsveld was sparsely wooded. It has traditionally been occupied by meadows and fields, populated by typical field birds such as lapwing, kestrel, and partridge. Drives lined with poplars (beverhout would be an old name for aspen or the rattling poplar) and pollarded willows create geometric shapes in this landscape.
On May 3, 1382, 80 years after the Battle of the Golden Spurs, the Ghent citizens, led by Philippe van Artevelde, defeated the army of the French and Bruges residents commanded by Count Louis of Male. This battle is known as the Battle of Beverhoutsveld.
