The Conques-Sainte-Cécile forest consists of 80% broadleaf trees, of which 65% are beech and 35% are oak. The remaining 20% of the area is occupied by a large variety of coniferous trees, such as Douglas fir, larch, Vancouver cedar, silver fir, Scots pine, but especially Norway spruce. Every twelve years, the forest is thinned to remove sick and weak trees and give the finest specimens every chance to grow.
The forest is large enough to house a lot of wildlife: deer, roe deer, wild boar, and mouflon or European wild sheep, which were introduced in 1954 in the Epioux domain, in the heart of the great Chiny forest. The mouflon has Austria and Poland as its native lands but has adapted perfectly to our environment. It primarily seeks rocky spots, such as the valley slopes of the Semois and also the Roche du Chat (Cat Rock). However, to encounter wildlife – always an experience – several conditions must be met, such as maintaining silence and wearing clothes in nature colors of green and brown.
