The church, which was possibly founded by the counts of Loon, was first mentioned in 1367. At that time, the patronage rights and tithing rights were already in the possession of the Antonine monastery in Maastricht. Around 1700, the commander-superior of the Antonine monastery received the greater tithe; the pastor received the lesser tithe plus a part of the new tithe. This arrangement meant that the Antonines were responsible for the maintenance of the nave and transept, the pastor for the choir, and the parish for the tower and side aisles.
