The first written evidence of the existence of today's Oud-Rekem dates back to around 1140. Then there was talk of Radekeim (home of the people of Rado). Due to its unique strategic location on the banks of the Meuse, as an advanced border post of the Holy Roman Empire, the local lord was directly under the authority of the emperor. Apparently there was peace and prosperity until the local baron decided on his own at the end of the 16th century to defect to the Protestants. Then he took off. The new lord had the existing castle razed to the ground and had a very luxurious Renaissance castle built. To boost the prestige of the town and of himself, he issued strict building regulations. The result can still be admired: a pleasant place with a modest, urban character.
